Desire Changes Perspective: Tips For Motivation
Desire Changes Perspective: Tips For Motivation
No person on earth has escaped the comically human fate of doing something they don’t want to do.
It is no surprise that eventually you will be met with a task that is painfully boring or bothersome to you. If it is inevitable that we must encounter these obstacles, you might as well learn how to overcome them.
Change Your Desire
Not wanting to do something is nothing other than your desire being associated with something else.
Example:
You do not want to go to work because you hate your job and want to quit. Your desire in the situation is to quit. Making the forced action of going to work unbearable.
When desire doesn’t align with action we get resistance, procrastination, and frustration.
Here’s how you break that cycle. Change Your Current Desire
Scenario-
You hate work and your desire is to leave, but you have 4 hours on the clock.
Change your desire - your new desire is to see how quickly you can make the 4 hours go by.
Now you're helping as many customers as possible, checking people out quickly and efficiently, you are keeping yourself active and busy. This strategy of shifting your perspective keeps you from the spiral of useless thoughts and hopeless mindset.
I know what you're thinking though …. It’s not that simple.
Yes, it is, you're only telling yourself it’s not to reassure yourself that your self-inflicted suffering is in fact worth it. That’s the hours you spent dreading work while having to be there regardless was justified. You have nothing to prove to me and everything to yourself.
Allow that unbelieving ego to sit on the side for a second longer… while I give you another example.
Example:
Say you're at a concert, you are having the time of your life, dancing and singing to your favorite artist. as the crowd grows you begin to get hot. As sweat drips from your brow you desperately beg for water. Three seconds ago, you were having the time of your life, now you are no longer singing, and your only desire is to soothe your dry throat.
Our desires change constantly, all the time, in an instant.
Start choosing what you desire. Stop letting what you desire control you and learn how to control it.
If you are reading this still unconvinced, sitting in your comfortable chair, hands feverishly hovering, ready to press your criticism into the letters of your keyboard. Take another second, take a breath while you're at it.
What is your desire right now, even in the air of your disagreement is the fragrance of a desire.
What do you want from me, yourself,
this moment,
this day,
your life?
If you passionately disagree with me, it is because your desire is to be right.
Instead of wanting to be correct, change your desire to wanting to be proven wrong,
Wanting to be convinced. See if it makes you happier… I’ll sit right here and wait.
I’m sure you are done by now…. ON TO THE NEXT!
PROCRASTINATION
Every human is an excellent author and playwright without a morsel of credit.
Every waking day and sleeping hour we sell ourselves a story. We tell ourselves that the homework assignment due at 11:59 is too difficult, so we’ll do it later.
That the work is to upset, depress, or anger us…. So, we’ll do it later.
We paint an empty piece of paper out to be the villain of the story we created.
We blame the page for its existence in a world we created. We bought the paper, didn't we? Sought it out at a Dollar store or Target. Picked it up, thought “It’ll do” without thinking twice about it. We tied no Ill will, no malice or bad intention to the paper. Because at that moment we understood that the paper …. Was just a paper. Nothing other than shredded trees and cheap bleach.
Then 3 weeks later that same innocent piece of paper is a damned and wretched torture device. A horrible invention that is single-handedly keeping you from bliss and happiness.
We sell ourselves stories constantly.
We created an entire character out of an inanimate object.
We place our hopes and dreams on other imperfect little humans.
We craft and create ideas on how we think our life should ebb and flow.
See it starts with the paper, but one paper leads to two, leading to a stack… before you know it you’ve written a story. You’ve authored an entire novel where you are the sole protagonist in a world of monstrous villains.
And it all started with a single piece of paper.
So no, the English midterm is not keeping you from happiness, you are.
Change your perspective and desire about the midterm, rewrite the story you drafted on the paper.
Simply do it.
Do it without the story attached, do it with clarity.
Do it with the same nonchalance you used to buy the thing in the first place. If you are going to sell yourself a story, at least cut out the ridiculous narrative your subconscious wrote for you.
Replace it with prized conscious decision making and accountability.
If you made it to the end of this …. This is your sign to go do that thing you’ve been putting off.
Yeah, I’m talking to you,
Go now
Do it now
You're dismissed.
